Why Do Two Cards With the Same Grade Sell for Different Prices?

It surprises new collectors: two copies of the same card in the same grade can sell for noticeably different amounts. Here is what is going on.

Eye appeal and the grading company

Within a single grade there is a range — a perfectly centered, vibrant 10 has more "eye appeal" than a technically-10 card that is borderline. And the grader on the slab affects price too, since markets value labels differently.

Population and timing

Prices also move with when a card sells — a hot week versus a quiet one — and with shifts in the population report. A single sale during a spike is not the same as the steady market.

Read the cluster, not one sale

That is why a single comp can mislead. Slabline values each card from a cluster of recent realized sales and shows the sales volume, so you see the real market for the grade rather than one outlier.
