Should I Crack and Regrade a Card?

It is tempting: a card you believe is undergraded, one grade away from a big premium. But cracking a slab is a gamble with downside — here is how to think it through.

The upside

If a card is genuinely undergraded and the gap to the next grade carries a large premium, a successful regrade can meaningfully increase value. The bigger the premium between grades, the more there is to gain.

The risks

You can crack a card and get the same grade — or a lower one — and you have paid fees, waited, and exposed the card to handling and damage. The bet only makes sense when the expected gain clearly beats those costs and risks.

Do the math first

Compare the current graded value to the realistic regraded value, minus fees, times your honest odds of the bump. Slabline’s value-by-grade pages make that comparison concrete before you reach for a slab cracker.
